Between September 7 and 12 of 2009, the national teams from Group 5 will be contesting on the cricket field in Kontokali and the football fields near the golf course.
The competing countries are Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Sweden, Turkey.
The first cricket match on Corfu took place in 1823, between the British garrison and the Royal Navy. Locals soon took up the game and formed sides to take on "the Brits". This tradition continues.
Originally the matches were played on the famous Esplanade in the centre of Corfu Town, but increased space has been given over to car parking. Nowadays, most games are played at the cricket field in Kontokali, which also has lighting for evening games and training.
Corfu remains a favourite destination of touring cricket clubs, especially in the month of July. Over 100 games are played each year, not only against touring sides, but also between the various sides on the island. Most games are of 35 overs.

The town of Corfu will be this year in the center of international developments in sport and was selected by the European Cricket Federation to host the European Championship Cricket Men Open 2009. The league is organized by the Greek Cricket Federation and the Municipality of Corfu, who have set the stage for a successful organization and international visibility of the island. The matches will take place at the premises of EL.O.K in Gouvia Marina, from 7 to 12 September. The choice of Corfu town to host is in recognition of long-term relationship with the sport of cricket.
The Championships will involve six countries represented by their national teams.
This report is taken from the "Corfu Today", dated 4th September. This is a highly organised event, and should be worth a good watch by all Cricket Fans. I only wish I could be there for some of the matches. We all hope it is a great success for Corfu.
